Informal social event in Boulder

Vicarious Trauma Training for Bilingual Staff and Interpreters

When: March 8th, May 17th, July 12th 2008
What: The Denver Center for Crime Victims and The Translation & Interpreting Center announce a new training opportunity designed specifically for bilingual staff and interpreters.

Health Enabling for Language Professionals: Coping with Vicarious Trauma (HELP) is a half-day workshop that focuses on the unique concerns faced by bilingual staff when translating or interpreting for victims of trauma and during critical incident situations.

Led by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Professional Counselor, the workshop explores the impact of vicarious trauma on the brain and its distinct impact on language professionals. Tools for increasing resiliency, developing coping mechanisms and enhancing self-care skills, including journaling, aromatherapy, exercise and meditation, are provided.

Computer Tools and Methods for Great Translation Performance

CTA all-day Professional Development Seminar, approved for 6 ATA Continuing Education Points

Location: Colorado History Museum, 1300 Broadway, Denver
Description: Designed to boost your translation quality and productivity, this workshop covers topics such as file management, conversion, and comparison; translation memory, machine translation, and terminology management; improved Internet research, essential keyboard shortcuts, advanced MS Word search/replace functions, and word counting; and computer maintenance for optimum performance.
Prerequisite: None (experience translating in Microsoft Office strongly recommended)
Cost: $65 for CTA members and $80 for non-members.

A Sharper Eye: Improving Your Proofreading Skills

Alice Levine, will be presenting “A Sharper Eye: Improving Your Proofreading Skills” especially for the Colorado Translators Association and guests on Wednesday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the College Hill Library in Westminster.

Alice, who began her forty-year career in publishing as a proofreader, has never lost her passion for catching errors. At this gathering, Alice will discuss techniques for catching those elusive errors. She will also remind us of a few grammar lessons we never had or have forgotten. Alice promises an enlightening and engaging evening. Learn how to improve your translations and other professional communications.

CTA member Kristen Boyle, DE to EN translator, has taken several classes from Alice in the past and has this to say, "I loved her classes. She is very enthusiastic about what she does, and makes the mechanics of writing, editing and proofreading fun! I appreciated her clear and interesting approach to the topics."

Boulder Social Event

CTA's informal social event in Boulder for the month of February will be lunch at Nepal Cuisine, 4720 Table Mesa Drive in South Boulder at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, February 13. Everyone is welcome and you do not have to be a CTA member to attend.

Nepal Cuisine is located in the old Rudi's restaurant, between US36 and Tantra Dr. on Table Mesa Dr. From US36, take the Table Mesa exit and turn west (toward the Flatirons). Just past the McDonald's on the left, turn left into the shopping center parking lot; if you get to the light at Tantra, you're slightly too far. From Broadway in Boulder, turn east (away from the Flatirons) on Table Mesa Dr. Just past the light at Tantra and immediately before the McDonald's, turn right into the shopping center parking lot.
